Orioles
vs Angels
Thursday,
July 17
Orioles win 2-1
Pitchers’ Duel at Rotary Outing
The Falls
Church Rotary Foundation is $270 “richer,” as a result their Thursday, July
17th, Orioles fundraiser. The Orioles defeated the World Champion
Anaheim Angels 2-1 in a well-pitched game against the Angels and their pitcher,
Ramon Ortiz, by the Orioles’ Rodrigo Lopez, who pitched seven strong innings
of one-run ball, allowing only 5 hits and a run-scoring sacrifice fly by
all-star MVP Garret Anderson. Anderson later failed to score the Angels’ tying
run in the seventh inning with the Orioles ahead 2-1, when he decided to return
to third base on a potential sacrifice fly, because he thought he had left the
base too soon. The Orioles’ bullpen also provided two innings of hitless
relief. Baltimore’s runs came on a solo home run by Jeff Conine in the fourth
inning, and a two-out RBI single by Luis Matos in the third inning, which scored
Jose Cruz, who had doubled. The victory was sealed on an Angel hit-and-run play,
when rookie closer Jorge Julio served up a fly ball to left field caught by
Oriole all-star Melvin Mora, who then made a perfect throw to first base to pick
off the runner, Troy Glaus, to complete a game-ending double play. The game,
which also ended a five-game Anaheim winning streak, marked the start of a
six-game Oriole winning streak,
Rotarians and Guests
Attended
Falls
Church Rotary Club members, friends and guests accounted for 26 of the 37
tickets sold, including seven by Pete Petro, whose son attended with guests.
Attending the game from the Falls Church Club were John Sweet, Frank Green,
visiting Australian Rotarian Don Gruber and his wife, Bob Ticer and his son, and
Joe Scheibeler and friends, along with friends of Jason Wallace and Alex
Rochette, and winners of door prizes sponsored by Ahmed Selim and Ron Adams.
From other Rotary Clubs, came Helen Walutes and family (Mt. Vernon Club), Bill
Bailey and Bolibar Cobos (Baileys Crossroads), Peter Schruppe and guests (Wash.
DC Club), Jim and Melinda Poirier (compliments of District Assembly door
prize-winner, Lew Claycomb, Caroline Club) and guests of Crystal City-Pentagon
Club door prize-winner, Jim Tompkins. Funds were raised by obtaining a discount
(from the Orioles) on upper reserved seat tickets sold by the club for $15, the
usual price for these seats.
The “Great Race” to
the Game
At Yankee
Stadium, the scoreboard plays an electronic race between innings of the three
subway lines to Yankee Stadium, the “C” train, the “D” train and the
“4” train. A similar situation occurred with our groups enroute to the
ballgame. Bob Ticer and his son leaving from Springfield found the traffic tied
up on I-95 north to the Wilson Bridge, and detoured around the Beltway inner
loop through Tysons and College Park enroute to Baltimore. John Sweet, with
Frank Green, Bill Bailey and Bolibar Cobos in his car, left from Tysons Corner
and found the traffic tied up on the Beltway inner belt through College Park and
detoured around the Beltway outer loop to I-95 north through Springfield and the
Wilson Bridge to the Baltimore-Washington Parkway. Joe Scheibeler, with a guest
from work and Don and Mrs. Gruber in his car left downtown Washington DC via
Route 295/Baltimore-Washington Parkway. They arrived at their seats during the
second inning, John Sweet’s party arrived just as Conine hit his home run to
lead-off the fourth inning and Bob Ticer arrived in the fifth inning. Maybe next
year we’ll have a team in Washington and avoid the rush-hour drive to
Baltimore.
Souvenirs
After the game, Bob Ticer and his son were exploring the
Stadium when one of the ushers gave Bob’s son a game ball.
Encore
The Falls
Church Rotary Club plans a second trip to the Orioles on Sunday afternoon Sept.
7 for a game against the first-place (AL West) Seattle Mariners followed by a
free concert hosted by the Orioles. Hopefully the northbound Sunday mid-day
traffic will not be as bad.
