It is with deep sadness that we report that Madge Karickhoff, wife of Falls Church Rotarian Dr. John Karickhoff  passed away peacefully on Friday, April 4, 2014, after a battle with leukemia.  . Her memorial service will be at: St. Peter’s in the Woods Episcopal Church, 1:30pm on Sat. Apr. 12 (www.spiw.org), with reception following.

MADGE COWLES HARRISON KARICKHOFF

A resident of Fairfax, VA, she passed away on April 4, 2014 of leukemia at the age of 69. She was born August 4, 1944 in Richmond, VA and grew up in Louisa County in Central Virginia.

 Madge was a former high school English teacher and received a Master's Degree in high school guidance and counseling from the University of Virginia. She was a membership chairman of the Mantua Women's Club in Fairfax, a Brownie Scout and Girl Scout Troop leader, and taught Sunday School at the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd in Burke. She entertained the Youth Group of the church each spring with a cook-out and outdoor games at their home.

Madge was chairman of the Diplomats' Wives through the McLean Branch of the American Association of University Women and a mem- ber of the "Welcome to Washington International Club" where she was Informal Activities Chair and a former corresponding secretary. Madge was a member of the Washington, DC chapter of the Women's Auxiliary of the Salvation Army, Communications Chair of the Arlington County Medical Alliance Wives, a member of the State Society of Virginia, a member of The Army-Navy Country Club in Arlington, and a member of the National Press Club in Washington, D.C. For 23 years, Madge went every Tuesday afternoon as a volunteer to the Little River Glenn Retirement Center in Fairfax, where she led a current events discussion group and also hosted yearly Christmas parties at the center for her group.

Madge is survived by her husband of 42 years, John Karickhoff, M.D. of Fairfax, VA and their daughters, Julie and Maggie of Los Angeles, California. She is also survived by her sister, Susannah Burwell Martin Thompson and her husband, Tom Thompson of Denville, New Jersey and their children, Scott, Julianna, and Catie. She is also survived by many cousins.

A Memorial Service is planned at Saint Peter's in the Woods Church in Fairfax Station, VA at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 12, with reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, you may send your tax-deductible gift to: Life With Cancer Family Center 8411 Pennell St. Fairfax, VA 22031.
