The Falls Church
The church was first a wooden structure built in 1733, and designed by the same architect who designed Mount Vernon, the home of George Washington. It was replaced in 1769; and the first expansion was designed by James Wren, a vestry member, and descendant of the famous architect Sir Christopher Wren. Among it’s famous vestrymen are such folks as George Washington, his father, Augustine Washington, and George Mason. Francis Scott Key, composer of our National Anthem, was a lay-reader in this church.
The
city of Falls Church, Virginia, was founded in 1699. It became a township in
1875; and an independent city in 1948. Both the city and our Rotary Club take
their name from this historic church. Falls Church is located seven miles west
of Washington, D.C., our nation’s capital.
