HISTORY OF THE FALLS CHURCH ROTARY CLUB On June 30,1952 the club was chartered. It was sponsored by the Rotary Club of Arlington. Its first President was Woody Woodbury a former Mayor of the city. Over the years, the club's meeting place has been held in many locations. It was held at the Village House, the Women's Club, the Holiday Inn an The Harvest Moon (Both in it's present location and across the street in Loehmanns Plaza) We were supposed to meet at a restaurant on Hilwood Ave but they weren't ready yet so we came to this location supposedly for 3 weeks but we've been here ever since because of Richard's great treatment. We have been the home club for two District Governors: Win Pendleton and Pete Petro. We have sponsored clubs in McLean and Bailey's Crossroads . Our membership has gone from an original 15 up to 60 during Petro's year and fluctuating in the 40's, 50's and to where we are now. Our programs have had many interesting speakers including: ex-Governor Wilder, the Captain & Exec of the ship captured by the Chinese, some of Falls Church's Mayors, Patch Adams, and others too hard to remember. We have had numerous fund raisers besides the fruit sale, entertainment Books, Memorial Day Beer Sale. We have had a Chinese Auction, a in House deal where each member received $10 and you had to think of a Way to make it grow. The results were interesting. We also sold a car one Year with good results. We had arranged for a phone line to the meeting So we could advise the winner. When we called, the mother answered and said he was working at McDonalds and he would be late getting home as he didn't have a car. What a nice ending! Further History (Beginning with Club's Founding)
